Once I started reading this book, I looked forward to returning to it everyday until I'd finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author drilled down into moments, describing them with such evocative imagery and sensory detail that I could experience them at a gut level. This is one of those rare books I could easily enjoy rereading.
After reading Tumbling I knew that there was no way Diane McKinney-Whetstone would be able to top such an impressive debut boy, was I wrong. Blues Dancing is phenomenal. I love that in McKinney-Whetstone's world there are no heroes or villains, just very real, very flawed human beings. Verdi's protected and ultra-safe world comes unhinged when her first (and only) true love, Johnson, comes back to town after a separation that's lasted more than 20 years. Verdi's been involved with another man, Rowe, the man she credits as having saved her life from the hell that Johnson introduced her to in the first place. I won't give anything away but if you loved Tumbling (and who didn't?) then you will also appreciate this masterpiece! Diane McKinney-Whetstone is my new favorite, contemporary author!
If I could take this book and make it a series that follows these characters until the end of time my life you be complete! This story of love is so well written I was close to tear by the end wishing it went on forever! This is one I will definitely read again and an author who's work I will surely follow!
As usual, excellent. I wish she would put out more books, but I guess good writing, takes time. I have hooked my 14 year old daughter on to her books. Although some of the themes may be a bit mature for her, I would rather have her read this, than the urban ,sexual trash than some girls her age are reading. This, at least, is giving her some old fashioned values and beliefs, that although outdated, resonate with my moral compass.Kudos!
It was realistic because I lived in that era. I saw a lot of what was in the plot first hand. I applaud the author for her descriptions and manipulation of the plot .
I am a Diane McKinney-Whetstone fan. I absolutely loved her 3 previous novels, and they are at the top of my recommendations list when folks are looking for good books to read. Having said that, I have been hesitant for years about reading this one because the description sounds so heavy. However, after bingeing on romance novels for the past several weeks, I decided I needed a break. After reviewing my list of books to read, I begrudgingly decided to check this one out. I started reading it and discovered that I was right it was heavy, but it was so good and definitely worth the wait. It sounds cliche, but I was hooked from page 1 and I was so anxious to see how this would end, that I had to actually force myself several times to slow down - because this author doesn't waste words, so you have to read each and every one. It is an excellent, brilliantly told story with an unforgettable caset of characters. I loved them all, with the exception of Rowe (of course!) who irritated the heck out of me, but I was pleased with his self-awareness at the end. I was horrified that Verdi was about to go back to hell, but loved the way that scene played out. Absolutely loved the ending and the hopeful new beginnings for all of the characters.

This book is good, yall - don't miss out on it! And Ms. McKinney-Whetstone, please grace us soon with another good story!
I read this book when it was originally published. I chose it then, not only because it was set in Philly where I was born and raised. I was also intrigued by the synopsis on the inside cover of the jacket. This of course, was before . When you actually went to the bookstore and picked up book after book to decide which one to buy. I always shared my books with my aunt, who somehow rarely managed to return , this was the last book she had the pleasure of reading from my library. Imagine my delight when I discovered this was available for my !. Please read this book. Then read Leaving Cecil Street and Tumbling. Even if you can't find Tumbling on .
