I am so thrilled this classic alternative history novel has finally been released on Kindle format! If you are a fan of Philip K Dicks " The Man In The High Castle", I couldn't recommend this book more. The setting is the 1920s in an alternate reality where the Conferderate States of America had won the Civil War; the Battle of Gettysburg having been lost. The main character is an aspiring historian, living in the almost third world United States. He travels to New York and working his way to becoming learned finally moves to a haven known for its intellectual achievements. One of the residents has discovered H1-X1, a method of time travel. I will leave it at that, not wishing to spoil. This is a must read for anyone, especially if you love history and science fiction. This novel is a classic, and like the Man in the High Castle; I really wish to see someone bring it to film someday. Thank you for releasing this on Kindle, I have been wishing it would be for some time now!

Really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It's unapologetic about exploring broad outcomes as it relates to even benign consequences. I was unsure when I saw it if it was going to explore the confederacy versus the union. Thankfully they are used to drive the characters plot and aren't center stage. Great Sci-Fi read, if you like The Man In The High Castle you'll love this book!
A rare piece of US alternative history, really well written. And very enjoyable to read. History does come alive in this book.
Just finished reading this book yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. In particular, the rich character development helped to envision how the author's world appeared. This may lead to a feeling of meandering at times, particularly in the middle chapters. However, I'd stress that this story is being written as more of pouring out of a personal history-thus not everything is always buttoned up. Overall I'd highly recommend this book, as it does a great job of transporting the imagination to a different reality.
Another case where the author was one of the first to create a new sub genre; in this case the alternative history. He did the same thing with prepper fiction with the books "Lot" and "Lot's Daughter".
The book paints the picture of that alternative in this story of a young man who moves from his small town to the big city. In the hundreds of small details that tell the story of this journey the reader experiences this completely realized alternative history. The twist at the end challenges all you've read so far and was a wonderful way to end the book.
This book was pretty good. I only gave it four stars because in the kindle version, there are absolutely NO maps (Maps help the reader place the locations described by the author into better perspective). The narrative describing the alternate history and how the 'Southron' states (how it was spelled in the book... Southron) won their independence was pretty good. So were the narratives that described how the alternative national and global societies developed post 'civil-war'. I was never left wondering, WTF? How did THAT happen? I found it all very interesting.
I was a little disappointed that the pace of the book was somewhat slow. I thought that it took interminably too long for the book to get around to explaining HOW the author starts the book writing from 1877 (The majority of the book takes place in the alternative history of a defunct USA after the South had won Independence and stays mostly in 1920 to 30s). It's not until almost the end of the book that the story explains HOW the author came to be writing his story from 1877 (weird twist, but somewhat expected due to the opening sentence of the book).
This is one of the earliest alternate history novels of which I'm aware. It deals with one of the two most popular scenarios of the genre -- Confederate victory in the Civil War. (The other being Axis victory in WWII.) It projects a dystopian view of the century following the end of the War of Southern Independence in which the North degenerates into third world squalor and the entire world suffers because the American industrial revolution and the coincident age of invention and rapid technological progress never occur. It's an unlikely scenario, even postulating division of the US into two nations, but one that's interesting to consider. It's a fairly well-written story a reader should have no trouble accepting as plausible.
I imagine it's a product of the time it was written in, but the female characters in it were so stereotypical that I didn't even bother finishing despite the interesting premise. I was tolerating the vapid females (there were relatively few female characters up to that point, and it wasn't the point of the story, plus the time, yadda yadda), but I gave up when a supposedly highly intelligent woman turned into a jealous, screaming shrew when a man she'd interacted with for literally 15 minutes showed up with an injured (15 year old) female in tow. Since, presumably, she was meant to be the love interest, I didn't even care to see how that messed up relationship turned out. Helpful writing tip if you don't know how to write women (which is fine), be Jules Verne and don't include them more than necessary...
